Making the most of the emerging sunshine,
With no Amazon Fire tablet in the car, we successfully ventured an hour’s drive to Helmsley and its historic castle without tantrums.
Situated in North Yorkshire, Helmsley Castle is a medieval fortress with weathered walls and towering turrets that take visitors on a journey through the annals of English history.
Approaching the South Barbican,
We learned that Helmsley Castle was constructed in the 12th century, circled by a formidable curtain wall and two huge ditches, the ruins of which can be seen today. It highlighted how it managed to withstand many attacks and incursions across its history, finally succumbing to a 3-month long siege by Parliamentarian forces.
Medieval Knights and many molehills guard the castle’s South Barbican. As we made our way over both bridges, we were greeted warmly by a Visitor Guide called David, who kindly offered to become our tour guide for the afternoon.
David took us on a mini walking tour of the kitchens, Great Hall, Buttery, Brewery and fascinating accommodation ruins – helping us envisage how they would have looked and operated almost 1,000 years prior.
Knowing the castle’s history like the back of his hand, he told us about the castle’s origins, dating back to the 12th century. He explained that changes in the brickwork on the tower and accommodation rooms indicated additions, both of which were extended upwards as Helmsley grew to ensure they remained visible and imposing across the landscape.
After thanking David for his kindness and information, Rachael had a good mooch around the museum whilst Isaac and I burned off some energy running around the grounds, climbing over wall ruins and, if Isaac had had his way, diving down into a ditch…
After leaving the castle, we spent an hour looking around Helmsley village and grabbed a bite to eat at Barkers Cafe Bar, which had super friendly and helpful staff. Once Isaac is a little older, we will revisit Helmsley and its Castle.
